Logarithmic perturbation theory for quasinormal modes
نویسنده
چکیده
Logarithmic perturbation theory (LPT) is developed and applied to quasinormal modes (QNMs) in open systems. QNMs often do not form a complete set, so LPT is especially convenient because summation over a complete set of unperturbed states is not required. Attention is paid to potentials with exponential tails, and the example of a Pöschl-Teller potential is briefly discussed. A numerical method is developed that handles the exponentially large wavefunctions which appear in dealing with QNMs. PACS numbers: 02.30.Mv

About the Signiicance of Quasinormal Modes of Black Holes
Quasinormal modes have played a prominent role in the discussion of perturbations of black holes, and the question arises whether they are as signiicant as normal modes are for self adjoint systems, such as harmonic oscillators. They can be signiicant in two ways: Individual modes may dominate the time evolution of some perturbation, and a whole set of them could be used to completely describe ...
متن کاملSpectroscopy of the Schwarzschild black hole at arbitrary frequencies.
Linear field perturbations of a black hole are described by the Green function of the wave equation that they obey. After Fourier decomposing the Green function, its two natural contributions are given by poles (quasinormal modes) and a largely unexplored branch cut in the complex frequency plane. We present new analytic methods for calculating the branch cut on a Schwarzschild black hole for a...
متن کاملPerturbative Approach to the Quasinormal Modes of Dirty Black Holes
Using a recently developed perturbation theory for uasinormal modes (QNM’s), we evaluate the shifts in the real and imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies due to a quasi-static perturbation of the black hole spacetime. We show the perturbed QNM spectrum of a black hole can have interesting features using a simple model based on the scalar wave equation. PACS numbers: 04.30.Db Typeset using REVT...
متن کاملDecoding mode-mixing in black-hole merger ringdown
Optimal extraction of information from gravitational-wave observations of binary black-hole coalescences requires detailed knowledge of the waveforms. Current approaches for representing waveform information are based on spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition. Higher-order harmonic modes carrying a few percent of the total power output near merger can supply information critical to dete...
متن کاملQuasinormal modes of D-dimensional de Sitter spacetime
We calculate the exact values of the quasinormal frequencies for an electromagnetic field and a gravitational perturbation moving in D-dimensional de Sitter spacetime (D ≥ 4). We also study the quasinormal modes of a real massive scalar field and we compare our results with those of other references.
